Forts in Udaipur

The city of Udaipur has a great importance in the state of Rajasthan. There are a lot of historical monuments. The Chittorgarh fort is considered as the largest fort in India, and has the most significance of all in Rajasthan. It lies at a distance of 112 kilometres from Udaipur and was built by many Maurya rulers in the seventh century. It covers an area of 700 acres, and has witnessed three battles of ancient times. This fort also has a huge importance in the history that have seen a number of battles and brave warriors of the land.


The Kumbhalgarh Fort is given the name of the second most important fort after Chittorgarh. It is located at a distance of 64 kilometres from Udaipur in the Rajasmand district. It was built in the fifteenth century by Maharan Kumbha and is also known as Badal Mahal- Palace of Clouds. It is also the birth place of Maharana Pratap.


The City Palace in Udaipur is one of the biggest palaces and was built by Maharan Udai Singh in the year 1559. Elephant fights used to take place in this palace during the times of the Maharajas. The palace is located on the banks of the Pichola Lake and has a number of gateways. The features of the palace are the perfectly made domes, the carved interiors, the magnificent exteriors, the hanging gardens and these leave the visitors gaping in awe.
